About this event

Celebration of the annual Synchronous Firefly mating displays in Kellettville, PA

Congratulations on being selected to attend the 11th Annual PA Firefly Festival! This event will be held in Kellettville at 13558 Route 666, Tionesta, 16353. Parking is FREE. This event will be held on Friday, June 30. Gates open at 7 pm for check-in of registered patrons.  Starting at 7:15 pm, there will be live music by Matt Miskie, nature exhibits with the experts, and lots of PAFF T-Shirts and merchandise.  There will be NO FOOD at this event other than light snacks and water.  You are welcome to patronize one of the local restaurants in the area before you arrive or bring a picnic.  For lodging in the area, check the PAFF website. Patrons should check in before 8:15 pm. At 8:30 pm, a firefly expert will make a presentation to the audience prior to the firefly tours.

At check-in, you will be assigned a group and guide. You will have two options (unless you have mobility issues*) 1. The Creek Walk AND Forest View, or 2. The Forest View ONLY. After the presentation has concluded at 9:15, you will be directed to the group you chose.

1. Creek Walk and Forest View:

Your guide will meet your group after the presentation to lead you on a 1/2 mile firefly walk (round trip) to view "Chinese Lantern" fireflies along Tionesta Creek. You will then return to the event site to begin the walk to the forest to watch the "Synchronous" fireflies after 10 pm.

2. Forest View Only:

Your guide will meet your group and lead you directly to the viewing area in the forest where you can set up your chair and wait for the "Synchronous" fireflies that display after 10 pm.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU REGISTER :

This event is intended for fifty (50) of the most curious nature lovers.  Couples and families with school-age children are welcome.  The event is not intended for children under 5 years of age.  Young children often find the dark forest uncomfortable and disrupt the peaceful viewing experience for others. Parents should plan accordingly.

The PA Firefly Festival is a RAIN-OR-SHINE event. The weather in Kellettville is unpredictable and passing showers happen frequently in June, but fireflies don't mind a little bit of rain.  Partial refunds minus $10 processing fees will only be offered in the unlikely event that a last-minute cancellation by the hosts is necessary due to SEVERE weather at the festival location.

ALL guests should be prepared for 1.5 to 2 hours of engagement IN THE DARK FOREST. Here are some helpful tips to follow for the comfort and safety of yourself and others:

  • Dress appropriately for the weather; sturdy footwear and rain gear are recommended
  • Wear light-colored clothing, hats, or outerwear.
  • Bring a camp chair
  • Walking sticks or trek poles are highly recommended
  • Flashlights are not required nor necessary, but if used, they must be covered by a dark red filter (available on-site).
  • No cell phones, smoking/vaping, or pets will be permitted on the guided tours.
  • Please apply bug spray before you arrive on the premises, or cover exposed skin
  • Only leashed Service Dogs are permitted on the tours.
  • NO LIGHTED SHOES!

There are NO REFUNDS due to patron cancellation. If for any reason you are unable to attend this event after you have registered, your registration is fully transferrable to another family member or friend. You do not have to notify us. Simply, have the individual check in using your name and/or bring your receipt. Do not contact Ticket Stripe for refunds.

Above all, Fireflies are creatures of nature.  PAFF has been monitoring and keeping data on firefly activity on these sites for ten years.  However, firefly emergence and flashing displays are prone to temperatures and weather conditions.  PAFF makes no guarantees nor assurances that guests will see Synchronous fireflies on any given night.  If circumstances cause the fireflies to not display the night of the event, the PAFF programs are designed to educate guests and provide enough information that they will gain an appreciation for and be able to discover and observe fireflies on their own at a future date.

*The walk to the creek and the bleachers is easy for typically able-bodied persons. If you have any mobility issues, we will do our best to accommodate your needs or make recommendations for alternatives that will allow you to see fireflies. Contact us or let us know when you arrive at registration.

PAFF is a registered 501(c)3 whose all-volunteer board's mission is to educate the public and raise awareness about all the firefly species in NW Pennsylvania.

By registering for the event(s), the patron(s) acknowledge(s) the risks inherent at the PA Firefly Festival (PAFF) and Kellettville Firefly Farm (KFF) including the recreational activities, and both release and hold harmless PAFF, KFF, Photinus LLC and its members Ken and Margaret Butler from any and all liability arising from sickness or injuries sustained while a guest or visitor at the facilities. The patron(s) further release from liability any guide that is contracted for instruction or tours.
