About this event
The Keweenaw Area Community Foundation and Real People Media (RPM) invites area nonprofit leaders to participate in an in-depth workshop on nonprofit Governance and Board Development on November 11th and 12th at the Keweenaw Storytelling Center in downtown Calumet. The workshop, conducted by Pamela Evans, provides valuable information for those serving, or interested in serving, as a nonprofit Director or Executive Director. The training is valuable to both new and experienced Directors. The workshop commences at 6pm on Friday, November 11 with a Meet and Greet. Organizations are welcome to bring flyers/literature and share upcoming events and/or needs. During the evening Ms. Evans will share the most critical issues facing most boards. Participants will be eligible for giveaways and other goodies provided by participating organizations.
Rebecca Glotfelty, RPM Executive Director, is enthusiastic about bringing this opportunity to Copper Country nonprofits. “RPM's mission is to help individuals and organizations share their stories. This workshop is an opportunity to help area nonprofits gain capacity to grow and share their mission. Organizations that take the time to train and educate their board of directors make an important investment in their leadership and that has a direct bearing on the organization. Continual training in governance makes good boards, great boards. No matter how long someone has been serving on the same or different boards, there are always new things to learn and new challenges to address.”
Saturday's agenda includes an in-depth look at the Board's responsibilities, including fiduciary duties. These duties are important because board directors also accept legal liability for the decisions they make. If a board decision is ever in question, courts will apply fiduciary duties as the standard against the board's decisions and actions.
Ms. Evans will also discuss how to leverage the individual work styles of board members to advance the organization. This will allow organizations to identify opportunities to strengthen the board and team dynamics. Upon completion of the workshop, participants will receive a certificate of completion of the course.
Pamela Evans, MS, CFRM, of Duality Consulting has over 30 years of experience working with nonprofit organizations, foundations, social enterprises in the areas of organizational development, collaborations, joint ventures, revenue diversification, governance, fund development, and strategic planning. She has lead over 70 strategic planning projects during the past seven years.
Register by November 1st. Nonprofits can sign up multiple participants, but space is limited and is on a first come first serve basis. This event by Real People Media, has received funding from the Copper Country Community Arts Council, The Michigan Arts and Culture Council and the Keweenaw Area Community Foundation.
