About this event

Anat Cohen & Marcello Gonçalves will play a concert of Brazilian duets in a Woods Hole location on Friday, July 25, at 4:30 PM. Ticket holders will learn the exact location of the concert - and other important information - by email about 24h before the show.

Anat Cohen is well known to Woods Hole audiences for her series of stunning Community Hall concerts with jazz guitar guru Howard Alden. She's been back several times, as a solo player, with Douglas Lora, and, in November 2023, with Marcello.

Anat is one of my favorite musicians on the planet at this time. In the fall of 2023, I heard her sit in with the Ear Regulars at their usual Sunday jam at The Ear in the West Village. Her clarinet duet with Dennis Lichtman that night was astounding.

I'm not the only music lover who thinks Anat is the best. Beginning in 2007, and for about a dozen years thereafter, she was voted "Clarinetist of the Year" by the Jazz Journalists Association. She's also been top clarinetist in both the readers and critics polls in the authoritative jazz magazine DownBeat. She's won many other prizes and awards, topped by 2017 when she won Grammy nominations for two different records, one with Trio Brasileiro (which played in Woods Hole in 2014) and another with Marcello Gonçalves.

Marcello Gonçalves is one of the top masters of the Brazilian acoustic 7-string guitar. He's a long-time member of the spectacular and world-renowned Trio Madeira Brasil. Those guys took my breath away when I heard them at the Clube de Choro do Brasil in Brasilia in about 2015. Marcello has also worked with Brazilian music icons such as Chico Buarque, Roberta Sa and (one of my favorites) João Bosco.

One of the most important events in my discovery of Brazilian music was the movie "Brasileirinho," a 2005 documentary of Choro music by Mika Kaurismäki; I was thrilled to learn that Marcello was the music director for the film! By the way, if you love Brazilian music, or want to know more about it, and haven't seen Brasileirinho yet, you have a great treat waiting!

Here's a video of one of Anat and Marcello's duets from a session in Rio de Janeiro in 2016: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEz4ohP4_Rk&list=RDlEz4ohP4_Rk&start_radio=1
