About this event

It is with great pleasure that we invite you to our 9th Global Health and Peace Awards to be held on the evening of Saturday, October 24th at the Ikeda Center in Harvard Square in Cambridge.

The GBPSR-IPPNW Global Health and Peace Award is a special annual tradition, born of our partnership with the Longwood Symphony Orchestra and its Health Art of Music program, where our community comes together to celebrate individuals from all walks of life who have made exceptional contributions to safeguarding humanity from the existential threats of nuclear war and climate change.

This year’s event will honor Archbishop John C. Wester of Santa Fe, New Mexico for his powerful leadership of the effort to abolish nuclear weapons as a moral, spiritual, and humanitarian imperative. Archbishop Wester’s archdiocese includes two of the three sprawling US nuclear weapons research facilities and the largest stockpile of nuclear weapons. He is a leading advocate for the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which the Vatican was the first nation-state to sign and ratify.

Our work is more urgent than ever. According to the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, it is now 85 seconds to midnight, the closest the Doomsday Clock has ever been to heralding human extinction. Your charitable donation is an investment in our local and global programs to educate the public and policy makers about the health and environmental dangers of nuclear weapons and climate change.

All proceeds from ticket sales and sponsorships are shared equally between the organizers, Greater Boston Physicians for Social Responsibility (GBPSR) and International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW). Ticket sales and sponsorships for the event fuel our research, education and advocacy throughout the year.
