Darker Mount Hope - One Night Only - Fri. Nov. 3, 2023

Our volunteers have rallied to offer a ONE NIGHT ONLY special version of the Darker Mount Hope Walking Tour after we had to cancel our annual fundraising event last weekend.

Allhallowtide has ended, the soul cakes have been eaten, and the nights grow ever longer as the November winds whip through the trees. Come walk with us in the gathered shadows during Bangor Historical Society's One Night Only Darker Mount Hope Walking Tour.

Meander the paved paths as a cast of living souls will regale you with true stories— dramatic, moving, touching, mysterious, and a little spooky —sprinkled with history, of course— about the permanent residents of Mount Hope and Bangor's past.

The nighttime walking tour of one of the oldest garden cemeteries in the nation is an annual fundraiser for the Bangor Historical Society and a seasonal favorite. This event is a major fundraiser for the Bangor Historical Society, and your support is greatly appreciated.

WHERE TO GO: Mount Hope Cemetery at 1048 State Street, Bangor. Parking is available along both sides of the cemetery entry road. (If your GPS takes you to the Korean War Memorial side on Mount Hope Avenue, try "1036 US Route 2, Bangor" to get to the main gate by the Second Maine Memorial.)

UPON ARRIVAL: Guests should check-in at the Superintendent's Lodge at 15 minutes before your departure time. The route is roughly one mile, and guests should plan to spend approximately 1.5 hours. You will be on paved paths and there will be some hills.

WHAT TO BRING: Bring your digital or printed ticket with scan code and a flashlight. We advise guests to dress warmly. The event will be held unless weather is severe, so bring an umbrella if it's lightly raining.

Tours are not typically canceled due to weather, and guests are encouraged to bring an umbrella if light rain is predicted. In the event that weather arrives that will create a severe negative impact on our guests or staff, tours will be canceled (with refunds.)

NOTE: Some GPS programs will deliver people to a gate on Mount Hope Avenue. These gates will be closed. The only open gate is the main gate on State Street. If your GPS sends you to Mount Hope Avenue, continue until the T intersection and turn right. Follow the cemetery fence until you see a gate flanked by granite posts. This is the main entrance.
