About this event

Santa Cruz, CA – Rachel Maryam Smith’s Tuna Can Cabaret comes to life for one night — a collection of mesmerizing music and performance reflections. Santa Cruz Art Expressions gallery set on historic Pacific Avenue above Lulu Carpenter’s Cafe contains a beautifully lit stage where Smith will read your mind.

Smith is technically a pop artist improvising in alternate economies such as idea economies, social economies, and other economies of intangible value while writing a long-winded dissertation on bubbles that blows.

Smith’s voice echoes those of Sarah Vaughn, Lena Horne, and June Christy. A recent UC Davis art studio alum, Smith (M.F.A., ‘20) is now a practice-as-research doctoral scholar at University of California, Davis writing and practicing her “Bubble Theory.” The performance is the fourth Tuna Can Cabaret installation named for the artist’s bike club. The club’s motto is: If the Tuna Can can Can-can then you can Can-can, too.

Smith will perform at Santa Cruz Art Expressions in Downtown Santa Cruz on historic Pacific Avenue April 20 at 8:00 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m.
