About this event
Hello Everyone,
We are inviting you all to join Sound Water Stewards Annual Whale Watching and Fundraising Trip Sunday March 15th! View majestic Gray Whales in the wild as these whales migrate from the winter breeding grounds in the Lagoons of Baja California, Mexico to their summer feeding grounds in the Bering Sea. Locally we have a small group of outliers nick-named “Sounders”. This group of roughly a dozen gray whales like to take a detour to start feeding on the rich bounty of ghost shrimp in Puget Sound. The Snohomish and Stillaguamish Estuaries and beaches around Possession Sound and Saratoga Passage are their core areas. In recent years these Sounders have used this spring resource more extensively some arriving early and leaving much later. Some now even spend their winters here. Two stayed with us this winter and four have recently been spotted. They will be joined by others all known individually to scientists, naturalist and whale enthusiasts in our area.
Be sure to join us to see these amazing whales on board the Puget Sound Express “Swiftsure” hosting a great team of naturalists including our own Jill Hein to inform you.
There is always a chance you might see orcas as well these days as transient killer whales in particular have moved in, to feed on the bounty of porpoises, seals and sea lions Puget Sound has to offer these days.
