Cellist Begonia Chan, violinist Rachel Moody and oboist Bede Hanley play together in the Auckland Philharmonia. The three thought it would be fun to get to know one other better playing chamber music in a small group, and that’s how the Tīeke Trio was born.
Begonia noticed that the call of the Tīeke sounds like the violin and the oboe. Upon listening Bede found that, indeed, it sounds exactly like the sound of his oboe reed! Begonia is originally from Hong Kong, Rachel and Bede are Canadians; Aotearoa is the adopted home of all three Tīeke Trio members and the group name is inspired by this country’s stunning nature and birds. They weave these themes into the music they play.
