About this event

The Bad Penny Pleasure Makers play a concert of New Orleans jazz flavored with big dollops of irreverent jug band frolic on Monday, October 12, at 7:30 PM, in a Woods Hole living room.

Ticket holders will learn the concert's Woods Hole location, and other important information, by email about 24h before the show.

The Bad Penny Pleasure Makers is an integral part of the New Orleans jazz community. Band members frequently play with Tuba Skinny, Aurora Nealand's Royal Roses, and other bands. Just as frequently, musicians from these bands turn up as Bad Pennies for an evening.

The Bad Penny repertoire is focused on music from New Orleans and southern Louisiana that was popular in the early 1900s. It also includes Hawaiian and Novelty music, Ragtime, Early Jazz, and Acoustic Country Blues. The band works hard to keep these forms kickass and fun.

On this tour, the Bad Penny Pleasure Makers is a quintet led by Matt Bell (guitar/banjo/vocals) and Joy Patterson (percussion/vocals), with Coleman Akin (violin/guitar/vocals), Jonathan Greene (reeds) and Joplin Parnell (piano/vocals).

Matt Bell is a regular member of Aurora's Royal Roses - a band that's ground-breakingly traditional. He's been to Woods Hole with Aurora at least once before, and he's looking forward to coming back!

Joy Patterson, in addition to her percussion playing (mostly on washboard) and vocals, is also known to play Kazookaphone and a wide variety of novelty sound effects - on slide whistle and other "instruments."

Matt and Joy co-own a used clothing store in New Orleans with a musical name - Tiger Rags Vintage. They also co-lead bands called, "Roochie Toochie and the Ragtime Shepherd Kings," and "The Wasted Lives." Nuf said.

Coleman Akin is deep into the New Orleans music scene. When he's not a Bad Penny, he leads his own Swing Set Septet, backs up The Nat and Cat duo, and plays traditional Sicilian mandolin pieces and 17th-century tarantellas with Robin Rapuzzi's Glo Worm Quartet. He's also busy in New Orleans' old time and cajun music communities.

Jonathan Greene - when he's not touring with the Pennies - plays clarinet with jazz bands (Anat Cohen and others), and with classical groups like the Albany Symphony Orchestra and Albany Pro Musica. He's on the board of The Flurry Festival, a participatory dance festival that brings out over 4000 dancers and 400 musicians every February.

Joplin Parnell . . . you don't need to guess too hard to know his father was a jazz pianist. With a name like that, he, well, he first made a name as an electronic musician. But he was born in New Orleans, and he was playing Dr. John's stuff on the piano by age ten. Fast forward, and soon he'll be playing the Steinway we've got in Woods Hole.

Join us for a special evening of musical delight!
