About this event

Two instrumental giants, Mike Marshall (mandolin) and Alessandro Penezzi (7-string acoustic guitar), will play a concert of Brazilian acoustic music in a Woods Hole living room at 7:00 PM on Monday, March 30. Ticket holders will receive a "concert info" email about 24h before the show with the concert's Woods Hole location and other important information.

The concert will feature jaw-dropping, virtuoso, high-wire-no-net treatment of the most immortal Brazilian choros. Here Mike and Alessandro play the classic choro, Assanhado, by Jacob do Bandolim: https://youtu.be/9fVm9y45ZoU?list=RD9fVm9y45ZoU

Mike Marshall was present at the re-inventinvention bluegrass as "newgrass" with David Grisman, John Hartford, Darol Anger, Tony Rice, Mark O'Connor and others. Then, on a tour of Brazil, he fell in love with choro, and brought it back to North America, forming the band Choro Famoso. Then he met classical mandolin professor Caterina Lichtenberg, and did a two-decade deep dive into Bach and other classical composers. A couple of years ago, I witnessed Mike's stunning reunion with Darol Anger featuring traditional, pre-bluegrass (e.g. Appalachian) fiddle tunes played with finely honed mastery, crystal-pure depth and heart-stopping virtuosity. Mike has been coming to Woods Hole since 2007. He is one of my all-time musical heroes.

I've been hearing Alessandro Penezzi's name for over a decade, but I only know him by reputation. One review says, "Penezzi is part of a new generation of Brazilian musicians who are re-inventing Brazilian choro with a contemporary language. As one of the top 7 string guitarists of his time, he has been invigorating the genre with fresh ideas, fierce improvisations, original compositions and a global palette of musical influences. His ability to bridge classical technique with Brazilian popular forms has positioned him as a key figure in the evolution of modern Brazilian instrumental music."

The two struck up their partnership at California Brazil Camp in 2024. They'll be kicking off their current US tour at the Savannah Music Festival, and play their way up the East Coast. They'll be at Passim, in Harvard Square, on March 29, in Woods Hole on March 30, and then off to the mid-west and west coast. Your impartial producer objectively rates this concert as, "You're effin' nuts if you even think about missing this one."
