About this event

We are all aware of the recent tragic events in Lewiston this week. The Bangor Historical Society puts the safety of our guests, guides, and community first and foremost.  As the situation unfolds around us, we have decided that we are unable to host our Darker Mount Hope Tours on October 27 & 28th, 2023. The risks and challenges of holding an outdoor event, particularly in darkness, under the still on-going situation are too significant.

You should have received an email already with information about next steps. You can also cut and paste the following address into your web browser to access a form that will help us know how to manage your tickets:    https://forms.gle/nbxNx34xmSyhTK4c6

If you have any questions, please reach out via email to curator@bangorhistoricalsociety.org. Thank you for your understanding and support of the Bangor Historical Society's Darker Mount Hope Walking Tour. We hope to see you next year.

Explore Bangor's dark side and take a walk amid the shadows during the Bangor Historical Society's Darker Mount Hope Cemetery Tour, Saturday, October 28, 2023.

As the night deepens while you meander the paved paths, a cast of living souls will regale you with dramatic, moving, touching, mysterious, and even spooky stories —sprinkled with a bit of history, of course— about the permanent residents of Mount Hope.

The nighttime walking tour of one of the oldest garden cemeteries in the nation is an annual fundraiser for the Bangor Historical Society and a seasonal favorite.

Guests should check-in at the Superintendent's Lodge at Mount Hope Cemetery (1048 State Street, Bangor) no sooner than 20 minutes before your departure time. The route is roughly one mile, and guests should plan to spend approximately 1.5 hours.

We advise guests to dress warmly and bring a flashlight. Parking is available along both sides of the cemetery entry road.

Advanced tickets are required and are not transferrable. Questions may be directed to the museum curator via email at curator@bangorhistoricalsociety.org or by calling 207-942-1900.

Tours are not typically canceled due to weather, and guests are encouraged to bring an umbrella if light rain is predicted. In the event that weather arrives that will create a severe negative impact on our guests or staff, tours will be canceled (with refunds.)

NOTE: Some GPS programs will deliver people to a gate on Mount Hope Avenue. These gates will be closed. The only open gate is the main gate on State Street. If your GPS sends you to Mount Hope Avenue, continue until the T intersection and turn right. Follow the cemetery until you see a gate flanked by granite. This is the entrance to the event.
