About this event
One of Fort Ligonier’s most popular History Alive! tradespeople, Jessica Young with Penny River Costumes returns for a fun two-day workshop where participants learn how to create their own colonial shift! In addition to being an expert sewist and teacher, Jessica also sells a wide variety of 18th-century era accessories, kits and sewing supplies.
To Make a Shift
Come and explore the most universal garment of an18th century wardrobe! In this two day workshop we will explore the history, styles, and specific cutting and sewing techniques needed to make an 18th century ladies shift--From zero-waste fabric layout, to flat felled seams, to thread linked buttons, we will explore all of the patterning, cutting, and construction steps involved in making this most useful and ubiquitous garment. All materials will be provided, and participants should have a basic familiarity with hand sewing, including running stitch, back stitch, and buttonhole stitch. This workshop is two full days with time provided for a lunch. Lunch is not included.
