About this event
Dr. Kevin Wayne Brown, a sociologist and professor at Oakton Community College of Des Plaines, IL, has dedicated his research to understanding the impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), particularly in the context of poverty. Dr. Brown's research highlights that African American as well as other children growing up in poverty face a higher risk of experiencing toxic stress. Toxic stress occurs when severe hormonal changes are triggered by frightening or threatening events or conditions.
Dr. Brown will shed light on specific stressors associated with poverty, which are collectively known as ACEs. These stressors include:
1. Child Physical Abuse
2. Mental Illness within the home
3. Drug addicted or alcoholic family member
4. Emotional neglect
5. Witnessing domestic violence against the mother
6. Child sexual abuse
During the event, attendees will have the opportunity to receive informational resources from local social service organizations who provide support to children and their families.
