About this event

Formed in 2016 as a grassroots volunteer nonprofit by Marcus James and Peter Campbell in April 2016. The community-based organization was founded in response to an outbreak of homicides in the Halifax area, of which over a third of the victims were of Black African Ancestry from the 58 Historical Black Communities.  “We felt that we could do something,” Said Marcus James

The foundation of 902 MAN UP was laid through grassroots advocacy and a growing recognition of the need for safe spaces where men could engage in honest dialogue, mentorship, and personal development. Rooted in a 400-year history of enslavement, segregation, and intergenerational trauma, 902 Man-up operates on Afrocentric principles, Ubuntu, and Restorative practices (Sankofa). Its main goal is to support all Black communities in Nova Scotia and beyond, with a special focus on empowering young Black males. The expanded mission of 902ManUp now includes all individuals or groups at risk of marginalization and social or academic exclusion. It places particular emphasis on young Black males and all Black youth who face marginalization due to cultural and academic exclusion.

Over the last 10 years 902 Man Up has confronted issues such as street checks, high incarceration rates, food and housing insecurity, domestic violence, and intergenerational trauma impacting Indigenous and Black communities. Commonly referred to as 902 MANUP or 9MU, our grassroots organization is making significant progress towards establishing a more just and equitable society for Black Nova Scotians.

As 902 MAN UP marks ten years of service, this anniversary gala stands as a celebration of resilience, growth, and collective effort. It honours the staff, supporters, and community members who have contributed to the organization’s journey—while reaffirming a continued commitment to building safer, healthier, and more connected communities for the years ahead.
