Amato's Supper Club
Amato’s Supper Club was in operation between 1941 and 1948 it was the hottest spot in Astoria for entertainment and hospitality in the 1940’s. It was the spot to be seen, dine, dance, meet friends, and see floor shows. It was located on 11th Street, between Commercial and Bond, in the Sandborn Building. The Supper Club space is currently the home of JP Plumbing.
The owner, George Amato was born in Portland in 1904, the son of Sicilian immigrants. After high school, he worked as a garage mechanic and later opened his own garage. Other business ventures included bowling alleys in Portland and Astoria, flea markets in Portland, fishing boats, restaurants and nightclubs. George and Mary Luciana married in 1934. They worked as business partners in their multiple business ventures and were highly successful as entrepreneurs.
In Astoria, it appears their first business venture was a four lane bowling alley in the Sandborn Building in 1934. The entrance was on 10th St.
Later, they opened the “Entertainment Salon” nightclub in the basement of the bowling alley in August of 1936. There was food service, beer and live entertainment. It was a mecca for shows in the 30's.
Then, the business venture expanded into the new Amato’s Supper Club with a full service restaurant, bar, stage and dance floor. It was known as the “Palace of the Pacific”, The nightclub that sat 500 people.
