Please join CSU as we welcome our guest speaker Dr. Ivan Shumkov, and moderator Lance Jay Brown, FAIA on Wednesday, September 18, 2024 from 12:30 PM – 1:30 PM ET for our next Green Cities Event of 2024!

Talk abstract:
Dr. Ivan Shumkov will share the lessons learned from his work in the public, private sectors and academia on how to create strategies and practices for improving the built environment by making it more sustainable and resilient. During his 20+ years of global experience, he has worked as architect, educator, author, entrepreneur, creating multiple companies and organizations: Build Academy, Build World, Build Tours, HAAUS and most recently BuildPass, providing solutions for making buildings and cities carbon neutral. With it, he is currently working on creating a digital platform for collecting and analyzing building data to create recommendations and projects that are more energy efficient. His presentation will cover design trends and best practices to build cities of the future that exist in harmony with our natural environment. He will also speak about different government initiatives in Europe and New York to make communities, buildings and cities more energy efficient, safer and healthier for people. The presentation will be followed by a conversation with the audience on related topics.

Speaker: Dr. Ivan Shumkov 

Dr. Ivan Shumkov is a New York based licensed architect, urban planner, entrepreneur, and professor with more than 20 years of experience across the private, public, and academic sectors. He is the founder of Build Academy, Build World, and Build Tours, organizations dedicated to providing professional solutions, education, events and experiences related to the built environment. 


His experience in the public sector includes senior government advisor, chief expert in architecture and urban planning, and chief architect in Bulgaria. Dr. Shumkov is a licensed architect in the EU, while practicing in New York. His work is at the intersection of architecture, urbanism and landscape design. 


During his academic career, he has taught at some of the world’s top universities as NYU, Harvard, Pratt, Parsons, UPC and UIC in Barcelona. He earned his PhD in Architecture at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia and graduated with four master’s degrees from ETSAB UPC, University of Florence, and Harvard University GSD, as a Fulbright scholar.

Lance Jay Brown, FAIA, DPACSA, NOMA  is a founding board member and Immediate Past President of the Consortium for Sustainable Urbanization He taught at Princeton and is the former Chair and Director of the Spitzer School of Architecture, CCNY. Educated at the Cooper Union he holds two master’s degrees from the GSD at Harvard University. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (FAIA) He is ACSA Distinguished Professor for Life  and received the coveted AIA/ACSA Topaz Medallion for Excellence in Architectural Education. He has edited and authored numerous publications and consults, teaches, and lectures nationally and internationally.
