HOTEL HISTORY

Activated on 19 September 1942, as Del Valle Army Air Base and the strategic command center for the Army Air Corps. The base was renamed Bergstrom Field on 11 November 1943 at the suggestion of then-Congressman Lyndon B. Johnson. It became Bergstrom Air Force Base in December 1948, coinciding with the creation of the USAF as a separate service. The inner round shape of the hotel was the area which served as the communal area and the hotel rooms were where the military staff worked. On July 1, 1966 the base became home to the Twelfth Air Force. The 12th was the controlling organization responsible for all Tactical Air Command reconnaissance, fighter, and airlift operations west of the Mississippi River. In the 1960s, Bergstrom AFB became the place where Air Force One flew into and out of often. It was the airfield that Lyndon Johnson flew into and out of when president when traveling between Washington and his ranch in Texas (Bergstrom Air Force Base, 2023). The new 12th Air Force headquarters building was completed in August 1968. The unique circular structure became an icon of the base and was nicknamed "The Doughnut" and "The Roundagon" (Bergstrom Air Force Base, 2021).

Major commands at Bergstrom:

  • Army Air Service Command, 23 May 1942 – 19 June 1942
