About Eleanor:

Eleanor Smyser is an SLP at St. Luke's University Health Network and Grand View Hospital. She holds both SLP and A-EMT licenses. Eleanor has worked in various settings as an SLP including skilled nursing, acute rehab, and acute care. She has also completed numerous volunteer hours on ambulances for 9-1-1 services. Eleanor is a multiple ASHA ACE award recipient, Stop the Bleed Trainer, a mentor for ASHA’s Student to Empowered Professional program, a volunteer member of the Medical Reserve Corp, was a guest on the Swallow Your Pride podcast, and teaches a course for TIMS University. Eleanor is passionate about medical speech pathology, multidisciplinary care, and lifelong learning.

 

Course Information:

This course explores the role of trauma in traumatic brain injuries and how mechanism of action, energy, and collision type can impact the injuries sustained. This course is taught from the perspective of a dual-certified SLP and Advanced EMT and incorporates aspects of emergency medicine into the world of speech pathology. 

Topics to be explored include types of trauma centers, trauma level activations, types of brain injuries, indicators of neurological status, and brain injury severity levels.

Course Objectives:

  • Discuss the differences between a subdural hematoma and intracerebral hemorrhage
  • Summarize two indicators of brain injury severity. 
  • Demonstrate understanding of differences between trauma centers.
