Deaf Cinema and Audience Engagement with Michael T. Cyr

Session Summary: In this interactive session, the audience is invited to engage in thought-provoking discussions about the Deaf Cinema movement and its relationship with mainstream audiences. A brief selection of films and their engagement strategies will be explored, along with the potential boundaries that Deaf and hard of hearing filmmakers continue to challenge.

About Michael T. Cyr is a local film aficionado and one of the first few filmmakers who was engaged in attempting to define Deaf Cinema back in the mid 2000. After obtaining his BFA in Film Studies he directed a number of experimental films and documentaries. One of his film won the 2007 Canadian Short Film Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. While Michael is focusing on pursuing his career goals to support his young family, he remains in touch with his artistic roots by supporting and appreciating local Deaf and hard of hearing artists. To this day he continues to explore definition of Deaf Cinema and sharing his insights with emerging filmmakers.

À propos de Michael T. Cyr :
Michael T. Cyr est un passionné de cinéma local et l’un des tout premiers cinéastes à s’être engagé, dès le milieu des années 2000, à tenter de définir le Cinéma sourd. Après avoir obtenu son BFA en études cinématographiques, il a réalisé plusieurs films expérimentaux et documentaires. L’un de ses films a remporté le Prix du court-métrage canadien 2007au Festival international du film de Toronto.

Tout en poursuivant ses objectifs de carrière pour soutenir sa jeune famille, Michael reste connecté à ses racines artistiques en soutenant et en valorisant les artistes sourds et malentendants locaux. À ce jour, il continue d’explorer la définition du Cinéma sourd et de partager ses connaissances avec les cinéastes émergents.
