Scots and the Seven Years’ War Talk and Reception

Join us for a lecture from distinguished Professor Andrew Mackillop, Department of Scottish History, University of Glasgow.

Fort Ligonier is honored to welcome Professor Mackillop who will discuss how both the Seven Years’ War (The French and Indian War) and the subsequent American War of Independence involved a wide range of peoples. These conflicts impacted American colonists, newly arrived settlers from Ireland and the German lands, Native Peoples, enslaved and freed African Americans, Quebecois, and tens of thousands of French and British.

The talk looks at one such group, the Scots. The Scots formed a disproportionate element within Britain’s military efforts to first secure and then defend its Empire in North America.

Sites like Fort Ligonier provide powerful evidence of the surprising number of Scots – both Lowlanders and Highlanders who took such an active part in conflicts many thousands of miles from Scotland itself. it emphasizes the powerful political, economic, and intellectual motivations which drove a relatively small country within the still new British Union to fight so conspicuously for Britain’s Empire in North America.

A reception with light hors d’oeuvres and beverages will be provided from 6:30 – 7:00 PM followed by the lecture at 7:00 PM and Q and A.
