Lake & River Health: Education in the name of Action
About this event
Understanding the Shoreline: Buffer Zones and Erosion Control
Join us for an informative and enjoyable evening focused on protecting the health and beauty of Pine Lake through effective shoreline stewardship.
The event begins with beverages and light refreshments on the patio overlooking beautiful Pine Lake, followed by a welcome and introduction from Jayne Jenks, Waukesha County Parks and Land Use Conservation Specialist.
With more than three decades of dedication to conservation education in Waukesha County, Jayne has inspired generations of students, teachers, and residents through innovative programs including Science Fest, Stormwater Action Day, and Aquatic Animal Ambassadors. Her passion for soil and water conservation has made her a respected leader in environmental education throughout the region.
Following the introduction, participants will have the opportunity to experience Pine Lake from the water as we board three pontoon boats for a guided tour of the lake. The tour will provide real-world examples of shoreline conditions, buffer plantings, and erosion control practices discussed during the program.
Onboard the pontoons (using nifty headsets for all participants to be able to hear), Jayne will discuss:
- What buffer zones are and why they are important
- Native Wisconsin plants that thrive in shoreline and riparian areas
- Practical erosion control strategies for waterfront properties
- Buffer zone maintenance requirements
- The benefits and potential challenges of shoreline buffer installations
Whether you are a waterfront property owner, a conservation enthusiast, or simply interested in learning more about protecting our lakes and waterways, this event offers valuable information and a unique perspective.
Come learn, explore, and discover how thoughtful shoreline management can benefit both property owners and the environment for generations to come. This event has first come/first serve LIMITED space and requires registration for every participant (due to boat capacity). Parking will be off site and will require an approximately 5 minute walk to the host home. Please wear appropriate clothing for the outdoor environment, walk, and boat ride. Rain date is: July 23, 2026.
