About this event

Brooklyn Telemann Chamber Society is proud to premiere Phèdre, a cinematic interpretation of Rameau's first opera Hippolyte et Aricie. Filmed on beaches, castles, & Victorian abodes, we tell the tragic Greek myth of Phèdre, wife of Thésée, cursed to love her stepson, Hippolyte, who has already fallen for a priestess of Goddess Diana. This production uses the magic of cinema to weave together the story using vignettes rather than a through-line plot, staying true to the dramatic progression of the original score, while incorporating musical numbers from Rameau’s various revisions. The dramatic color shifts allow the viewer to question whose lens they are seeing the narrative unfold through, humanizing villains and gods. Sung in French with English subtitles.
