Beyond the Brain: How Traumatic Brain Injury Impacts Complex Medical Conditions

Webinar Description:

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is often viewed as a neurological condition, but its effects extend far beyond cognition and communication. Cognitive-communication impairments can make managing chronic medical conditions more difficult, increasing the risk of medication errors, missed appointments, preventable complications, and hospital readmissions. This webinar explores how TBI can complicate the management of heart failure, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, liver disease, pulmonary disease, and polypharmacy. Through clinical examples and practical strategies, participants will learn to identify cognitive barriers to disease self-management and apply interdisciplinary approaches that support safer, more effective care and improve patient outcomes across healthcare settings.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

1. Describe how cognitive-communication impairments following traumatic brain injury can affect the management of complex medical conditions across healthcare settings.

2. Identify common chronic medical conditions that may present unique management challenges for individuals living with traumatic brain injury, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, liver disease, pulmonary disease, and polypharmacy.

3. Apply evidence-informed, interdisciplinary strategies to improve patient education, treatment adherence, and functional participation for medically complex adults with traumatic brain injury.

1 PDH FOR LIVE ATTENDEES! {recording will be available afterward for registrants}

THANK YOU to our featured sponsor, The Modern MedSLP. If you are a newer SLP or are looking for a way to brush up on body systems before our webinar, we HIGHLY recommend Brooke’s course: The Hip Bone's Connected to the Hyoid Bone: Body Systems & Swallowing

The Modern Med SLP’s Body Systems course will teach MedSLPs the essential medical knowledge every SLP needs to better understand how the body's systems work together, and how those interactions impact patient care. Through a real-world case study, you'll learn practical, clinically relevant strategies you can immediately apply to evaluate, treat, and manage medically complex patients with greater confidence. This is in NO WAY a pre-requisite but a recommendation!

This course is eligible for 1 PDH! You will receive an email with a survey after this webinar (live attendees only). You will receive your PDH certificate following the completion of that survey.
