Green Cities Shanghai | Transformation and Regeneration of Industrial Zones
Please join CSU as we welcome our guest speaker Prof. Wang Lin, and moderator Lance Jay Brown on Monday, April 29, 2024 from 9 AM - 10 AM ET NY / 9 PM - 10 PM Shanghai time for our next Green Cities Event of 2024! This talk is in collaboration with AIA Shanghai.
Abstract
China's industrial sector is rapidly evolving, especially in Shanghai, where old industrial areas are being revamped as part of the city's urban renewal drive amid global urbanization. Using the preservation-regeneration of the Shanghai Bao Steel Stainless Steel Zone as a representative case study, Wang Lin will present the challenges and opportunities facing similar projects. This presentation will delve into sustainable strategy and tactics for transforming industrial zones and buildings, emphasizing an open approach for cooperation and long-term co-governance, to create a livable district where people can work, live, create and relax.

WANG Lin is a professor of Architecture Department, School of Design at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, responsible professor of China Urban Governance Research Institute, the director of International Research Center for Urban Regeneration, Conservation and Innovation. She is a Loeb Fellow 2009 of Harvard University, an adjunct professor of Tongji University and distinguished professor of Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts. Her research focuses on urban design and planning, urban regeneration, urban heritage conservation and urban public space, etc.
WANG Lin graduated from Tong Ji University and received a PhD in Urban Planning in 1998. Prior to joining Shanghai Jiao Tong University, she worked at Shanghai Planning and Land Resource Administration Bureau from 1998 to 2015, where she held the posts of the director of Conservation Department, the director of Master Planning Department. She was also the deputy director of the Shanghai Urban Planning Design and Research Institute. WANG Lin directly participated in the planning, research and management of Shanghai master planning, regeneration of waterfront areas, and conservation of historical areas, and was responsible for planning, urban design, project permission of Shanghai’s historical areas and heritage buildings.
Professor WANG Lin has long been committed to the research and practice of urban regeneration and historical conservation, and has published more than 30 academic journal papers. She also participated in the writing of several professional books such as Theory and Planning of Famous Historic and Cultural Cities;Research on the Waterfront of Historical Water Towns in Southern Yangtze River and served as a reviewer for authoritative journals such as Urban Planning. She has undertaken more than 20 national, provincial and ministerial research projects and has won many awards; including the National Social Science Foundation key project, Research on Theory and Methodology of Industrial Cultural Heritage Preservation and Utilization in the New Era as the project lead. The results of Research on Major Issues in Urban Regeneration organized and carried out by her were adapted by the Regulations on Urban Regeneration of Shanghai and won the first prize of the Prize of Shanghai Municipality for the Decision-Making Consultation Research Achievements. The project Study on Compilation Methodology of Conservation Planning of Shanghai Historic and Cultural Areas led by her won the Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award and the Gold Award for the Thirty Years of Pudong Development and Opening-up.
Professor WANG Lin also has rich planning experience and design practice, and the projects led by her have won many international and domestic awards. Representative works include: Shanghai Xuhui Hengshan Road-Fuxing Road Historical and Cultural Area Regeneration and Planning Implementation; Xuhui Hengfu Historical Street Design Guidelines; Shanghai Hero Golden Pen Factory Preservation and Regeneration Research; Shanghai Wusong Industrial Park Transformation Planning and Stainless Steel Zone Regeneration and Urban Design; Shanghai Suzhou Creek Waterfront Space Redevelopment and Landscape Design (Garden Bridge-Henan Road Bridge Hongkou Section, Changning Campus of East China University of Political Science and Law); urban design and landscape improvement design around Wukang Building in Shanghai; Fuzhou Youth Plaza Urban Renewal, etc. The awards won in the past five years include Citation Award of the AIA China Design Excellence Award; 2022 Landscape Architecture Award-Best of Best of the AMP Architecture MasterPrize in Urban Design category; the Gold Winner for the American MUSE DESIGN Award in the urban design; RT Global Architecture and Design Award; Gold Winner of Global Future Design Awards; Gold Award in World Design; Eduwik Architecture Excellence Award; Gold Award for Urban Design of YUANYE Awards International Competition; Meritorious Service Competition Awards of Major Projects in Shanghai, etc.)
Professor WANG Lin holds other academic positions. She is a member of the Human Settlement Committee of the Science and Technology Committee of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. She is the deputy director of the Urban Regeneration Committee of Urban Planning Society of China, and a member of the National Historical City Preservation Academic Committee; she is the director of Urban Design Branch of the Architectural Society of China, expert member of the Shanghai Planning Commission, and Global Governing Trustee of Urban Land Institute.
Moderator: Lance Jay Brown, FAIA, DPACSA, NOMA
Lance Jay Brown is a founding board member of the Consortium for Sustainable Urbanization (CSU). He taught at Princeton and is the former Chair and Director of the Spitzer School of Architecture, CCNY. Educated at the Cooper Union he holds two master’s degrees from the GSD at Harvard University. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (FAIA) He is ACSA Distinguished Professor for Life and received the coveted AIA/ACSA Topaz Medallion for Excellence in Architectural Education. He has edited and authored numerous publications and consults, teaches, and lectures nationally and internationally.
