Beyond Milkweed: Gardening for Monarchs (And Other Pollinators, Too!)
About this event
Are you frustrated with your lawn growing poorly? Are you tired of mowing, watering, and fertilizing and the endless maintenance to keep a green space? Do you want to see an array of blooms instead of solid green? Are you wanting to support pollinators and the environment? Do you want to have an expanse of native plants instead of a turf of non-native grasses? Are you wanting to just try something different?
Join Ash Burkowski from Northern Wildscapes Plants+Design at Valour Community Centre - Orioles (448 Burnell) for the popular presentation, 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝘄𝗻𝘀.
𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝘄𝗻𝘀 will begin by giving you an overview of the benefits of native plants and introduce you to some basic natural history, before moving on to up-to-date science-based techniques for gardening with native plants in our soils, site preparation, sourcing native plants, and discussing the current trends of naturalized lawns.
With that foundation laid, 𝗡𝗣𝗡𝗟 will then walk you through approximately 30 different native species that are potential lawn alternatives due to attributes such as mowability, spreading or sod-forming qualities, foot traffic tolerance and more.
Each slide includes detailed photos of each species as well as scientific, common and traditional First Nations’ names. You will also learn about each plant’s pollinators, general growth habits and other useful information with a detailed digital handout available after the presentation. Scientific sources for all the information will also be included - it's so information-packed it's impossible to take notes!
There is also a Q+A session after the presentation to give you advice on your native plant projects.
Say goodbye to boring, high-maintenance non-native grass lawns and hello to a beautiful, sustainable native garden this summer at Valour Community Centre!
$25, in-person.
