Three with Tilda

Join South Philly Autonomous Cinema this fall for three films featuring the inimitable Tilda Swinton! All screenings will take place at Val’s Lesbian Bar, a 21+ venue located at 605 S. 3rd Street; the screening space is up a flight of stairs without wheelchair access. Tickets are $10 presale and at the door — or save a little and bundle all three films for $24.

Orlando 

It’s difficult to imagine anyone but Tilda as the time-traveling, shapeshifting, binary-defying Orlando in Sally Potter’s adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s 1928 novel. Tilda has called the film “a very practical legend of a spirit in motion, growing up before our eyes and becoming real.” She brings her trademark androgyny and restraint to Woolf’s tale of longing—for love, for creative fulfillment, for meaning and knowledge of self—across the centuries.

Problemista

What happens when an immovable object (an independent curator’s undying allegiance to FileMaker Pro) meets an unstoppable force (a toy designer’s urgent need for a work visa)? Julio Torres’s directorial debut features Tilda at her most uncorked—and most unexpectedly tender—as she balances preserving the legacy of her late partner and making life miserable for everyone around her. As she switches from  antagonist to stubborn but sweet accomplice, sometimes within the space of a single scene or sentence, Tilda makes one thing clear: she’s got the range.

Edward II

This highlight of Tilda’s seven-year collaboration with Derek Jarman finds her as Isabella of France, spurned by the titular king. As Edward II sets his marriage, reputation, and citizenship on fire to pursue hot gay sex with his favourite Piers Gaveston, Tilda writhes and burns and schemes. Jarman reinterprets Christopher Marlowe’s early-1590s play with anti-Thatcherite flair. He wrote that “heterosexuals have fucked up the screen so completely that there is hardly any room left for us to kiss there,” but Edward II sets the record straight.
