About this event

CSW Director Rob Field will lead a two-day pilgrimage in Western North Carolina May 2-3 to explore the frescos of renowned artist Ben Long. We will tour multiple sites with Long’s frescoes, including Chapel of the Prodigal in Montreat, Sloop Chapel in Crossnor, St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in West Jefferson (photo at left), Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Glendale Springs (photo below), and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Wilkesboro. We will also visit the Haywood Street Congregation in Asheville to see a new fresco painted by a student of Long's. We will travel as a group, and spend the night of May 2nd at the Holiday Inn Express in West Jefferson.

The Fresco Pilgrimage will focus on contemplative exploration of the history and beauty of frescos as art and storytelling. Visio divina, a group spiritual practice, will be one of the ways we will reflect on these works of art. All are welcome to join us, regardless of religious or spiritual background. Participants will arrange their own transportation, so carpooling is recommended.

Departure date, time & location: Thursday, May 2 at 7:45 a.m. from downtown Brevard. Return: Friday, May 3 at approximately 6:30 p.m. in downtown Brevard.

Cost: $350 per person (single occupancy), or $570 for 2 adults (double occupancy). Included are a pre-retreat gathering, all tours and meals, a pilgrimage journal, and a group donation to each church we will visit. Want to avoid extra fees? Write & send a check to CSW, 100 Elks Club Road, Brevard, N.C. 28712. If you do pay by check, we recommend emailing Cindy Decker so we can reserve a space for you (communications@centersw.org).

Spaces in this pilgrimage are limited by the small size of some sites, and we anticipate filling up well before our departure. Early registration is recommended.
