About this event

The Contra Costa Chorale presents their fall program, "Darkness to LIght" on Friday, December 5th at 7:30pm at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Berkeley, and on Sunday, December 7 at 4:00pm at the Orinda Community Church.

The Contra Costa Chorale, led by Artistic Director Dr. Brad Schultz, and accompanied by Martin Morley, presents its fall program centered around three larger works that follow a trajectory of Darkness to Light. Reena Esmail’s “A Winter Breviary” is a set of carols that traces a journey through the solstice, the longest night of the year, and recognizes the many ways we honor the darkness and celebrate the return of light. Randall Thompson’s iconic “Frostiana” is likely familiar to many of you, but performing this cycle of Robert Frost poems with orchestra will be a treat. Finally, George Frideric Handel’s “Foundling Hospital Anthem” will complete the program. This is the last piece of sacred music that Handel wrote and includes quotations of many of his earlier works—the final movement of this piece is actually the “Hallelujah Chorus.” What a great way to end a concert!

We hope you will join us for a program that sings the hope inherent in music as we approach the turn of the year and find ourselves longing for music to sustain us through the short days until we find the promise that will waken the sleeping land. Make plans now and invite those near you to join us for “Darkness to Light” in December.
