About this event
STATES: OBSERVATION is a Butoh dance trilogy of 3 works in progress—Origin, Mutation, and Entropy at Absolute Zero devised and danced by Scoop Slone and brought together in one piece through the residency at 3AM Theatre for Pride Month.
Rooted in quantum physics, STATES: OBSERVATION examines the state of quantum nothingness (pre Big Bang) correlating with Zen Buddhism, and Shintoism, and the nature of existence at the atomic level. This piece also draws reference to the origin of the (queer) IT self, which is evolving, and the manifestations and potential of that self amidst feelings of aloneism, outsiderism, chameleonism, and compartmentalization portraying the Self as fragmented yet seeking cohesion through the observation of narratives mirroring IT-Self back to IT-Self.
Contemplating the fluidity of identity and drawing from personal and collective queer and genderqueer narratives, Scoop, evokes a multiplicity of I-positions, or states: observing IT-Self like an audience member in 3rd person, as both subject and object. The trilogy is based upon the quantum physics principle that reality is probabilistic and unfixed until observed: the act of observing a particle’s position or state changes the particle IT-Self, altering IT’s momentum and creating uncertainty.
The 3 pieces have been studied and presented independently in Venice, Amsterdam, NYC, and Japan since March 2023, with further iterations to be presented fall 2025 in Japan and India.
