About this event
THE GENITAL AUTONOMY LEGAL DEFENSE AND EDUCATION FUND (GALDEF)
INVITES YOU TO A SPECIAL LIMITED OPPORTUNITY ONLINE FILM SCREENING OF "CURED"
What do homosexuality and the penile foreskin share in common?
The medical community demonized both as inherently pathological, instilled unwarranted fear in the public mind, and adopted radical measures to eradicate both. This event explores how the medical community can abuse its power to serve social goals.
For decades until 1973, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) viewed homosexuality as a condition that needed to be "cured." Today it's hard to believe that lesbians and gay men were subjected to electroshock therapy, frontal lobotomy and other medically-approved "treatments".
It was only after a decade-long effort by gay rights advocates that the APA officially removed homosexuality as a "psychiatric disorder" from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM). The story of how these committed activists overcame decades of entrenched thinking within the APA is movingly told in the heartbreaking yet inspiring documentary "Cured."
What lessons can the genital autonomy movement learn
from the successful campaign to depathologize homosexuality?
As it once did with homosexuality, the U.S. medical establishment reinfores ignorance and preys on social fears by denigrating the penile foreskin and resorting to radical measures like circumcision to eradicate it. As intactivists continue their grassroots campaign to depathologize a normal, healthy and natural part of penile anatomy, the parallels between these sister movements make "Cured" important viewing.
GALDEF is pleased to announce a limited opportunity for attendees of this special event to view "Cured" (55 minutes) and to submit questions to panelists in a post-screening follow-up. This unique event is ideal for both genital autonomy advocates and for those LGBTQIA+ individuals you may wish to invite who may not know this part of their community’s history.
We hope you’ll join us in viewing this important documentary together with human rights activists across the U.S. and around the globe, while raising funds to support GALDEF’s efforts to launch litigation that guarantees the right to bodily integrity for everyone, regardless of sex or gender.
