About this event

Join us on Saturday, May 2nd 2026, from 2:00-5:00pm, for HEARTS May Day to celebrate the 251st anniversary of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence at the Hugh Torance House and Store. We're bringing the late 18th and early 19th centuries to life through dedicated reenactors, hands-on experiences, and enthusiastic volunteers. Come experience a fun-filled day of local history, nature, and backcountry folkways, including cooking, gardening, blacksmithing, music, and a community Maypole Dance! This living history event will take you back to the time the document known as the Meck Dec was signed, in which Mecklenburg County citizens declared independence from England a year before the rest of the colonies. Period attire and costumes are welcome!
