About this event
Lucy Kaplansky is an acclaimed singer songwriter of rare talent with a bag full of enchanting songs”. She has released nine critically acclaimed CDs, two of which were awarded Best Pop Album of the year by the Association for Independent Music. She has collaborated with many artists such as Shawn Colvin, John Gorka, Patty Larkin, Cliff Eberhardt, and Dar Williams. She has often mixed her own songs with well-chosen covers. The quality of her voice easily stands up to potential Emmylou Harris comparisons.
Lucy started out singing in Chicago folk music clubs as a teenager. Then, barely out of high school, she took off for New York City. and found a fertile community of fellow songwriters. With a beautiful flair for harmony, Lucy was everyone’s favorite singing partner, but most often she found herself singing as a duo with Shawn Colvin.
Lucy later joined a folk supergroup called Cry Cry Cry comprised of acclaimed singer-songwriters Richard Shindell and Dar Williams. They made their debut in 1998 with a self-titled album, which was an astonishing success in stores and on radio resulting in a national tour of sold-out concerts, as well as a national sold-out reunion tour in 2018. The group was a mainstay on radio during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
In 2010 Lucy joined up with acclaimed singer-songwriters John Gorka and Eliza Gilkyson to record an album as part of new folk super-group Red Horse. Awash in gorgeous harmonies and stripped down production, the album features the singers performing each other’s songs. Red Horse received rave reviews and was the number one album on Folk Radio for several months. Lucy has also sung harmony on albums by Suzanne Vega, Bryan Ferry, Nanci Griffith and Shawn Colvin. Her voice remains in high demand by her peers.
Other accomplishments: Lucy’s solo recording of "More than This" has over 12 million streams on Spotify, and she has been featured on NPR’s All Things Considered, Mountain Stage, Weekend Edition, and Morning Edition, as well as CBS Sunday Morning and BBC Radio,. Her song “Guilty as Sin” was featured in the NBC television show “Ed,”
