About this event

The Kay Lewis Trio, featuring the vocals of Kay Lewis, with Kerry Lewis on bass and Conal Fowkes on piano, plays a concert in a Woods Hole living room on Friday, May 15, at 7:30. Ticket holders will learn the location of the concert - and other important information - by email about 24h before the show.

I first heard Kay Lewis sing at Mona's on a hot Tuesday night, and WOW. In this video she sings, "I Found a New Baby" at Mona's - a typically amazing Mona's jam session - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13YHdZKIREM . . . This video captures the spirit of Mona's in 7.4 minutes - and shows what Kay Lewis can do! You'll recognize several other musicians who have been to Woods Hole. You might even recognize a small-time concert promoter from a little Cape Cod village on the far right of your window.

And then I had the good fortune to catch a whole set of Kay Lewis at Foxtail in New York. I couldn't help but think that Ella had it all when she was 22, but nobody knew she'd be famous. And then I saw her do a set at Gotham Jazz Fest with her brother Kerry on bass and Jesse Gelber on piano. I was hooked.

But when Kay Lewis came to Woods Hole last June, she was jazz royalty personified. She owned the audience from her first note she sang until our last ovation. The world is starting to discover her. She grew up in a New Orleans musical family that's several generations deep. I saw her dad playing the bass several times when I visited New Orleans in March. She's a graduate of the (prestigious) NYU jazz program.

Kay's band included Kerry Lewis, her brother, who has also become a Mona's house band regular over the last couple of years, and Conal Fowkes on piano. Conal was a member of Woody Allen's jazz band for a number of years, and he played - and even sang - in the movie "Midnight in Paris."

You will want to catch Kay Lewis while you still can feel her warm glow in a small room.
