David Ostwald's Hot Four
About this event
Olli Soikkeli and Cesar Garabini will play a concert of jazz guitar duets, a synthesis of Manouche-style and Brazilian chorinho, on Saturday, November 14, at 7:30 PM in a Woods Hole living room.
One review calls this duo, "The guitar duo you didn't know you needed." It continues, "Remember when Billy Joel said the piano sounds like a carnival? That’s what it’s like being in the room with Olli Soikkeli and Cesar Garabini when they get their irrepressible energy flowing."
The review goes on, "Olli is gypsy jazz guitarist with bluegrass-style alternate picking technique. And Cesar is a thumb-picking Brazilian choro player with jazz influences. If there was a rulebook for either of their respective styles, they clearly didn’t read it. But when they fire up their twin approaches, the groove is immediately and thoroughly captivating. Cesar’s pulsating choro bass lines blur the distinction between melody and rhythm instrument, And Olli’s fearless arpeggio roll patterns float over the top like ragtime piano reimagined for guitar . . . see them live . . . to experience the magic for yourself."
Olli was 18 when he first came to Woods Hole with Nicki Parrot, Frank Vignola, Vinny Raniolo and Jason Anick. jaws dropped when he started to play. Soon he moved to Brooklyn and dived into the deep, rich musical paella of New York. Lately he's been touring Europe with other great musicians. His playing becomes deeper and richer every time I hear him.
Cesar Garabini was born in Brazil and has lived in Italy and the USA. He plays guitar like a Brazilian, in a wide variety of styles including samba, choro, Bossa Nova, baiao, forrò, waltze, classical, MPB (musica popular brasileira), Portuguese "Fado" and more. He frequently plays alongside Anat Cohen and other visiting Brazilian musical stars.
The duo has been to Woods Hole several times. I don't know what Olli and Cesar have cooked up for this gig, but I know that Brazilian chorinho and Gypsy jazz are a natural pair. Both matured in the early 20th century influenced by urbanization, industrialization, European classical music, African rhythms, popular dance music and the dawn of the recording industry. Both are way, way sophisticated but pay explicit homage to their folk roots. And some songs have crossed over from choro to Django and vice versa.
