Data Visualization for Communicating Research Findings
Instructor: Kerry Rodden, PhD; Co-author Quantitative User Experience Research (Springer, 2023)
February 2-5, 2026 at Fort Mason Center (9:30a-12:30p daily)
This hands-on workshop teaches researchers how to transform analysis results into clear, compelling visualizations that communicate effectively to stakeholders. Participants will learn to use R and ggplot2 to create polished explanatory charts for presentations and reports.
We'll cover essential chart types including bar charts, scatterplots, line charts, and choropleth maps, plus effective use of color and text, and storytelling techniques that help audiences understand and act on research findings. Through practical exercises with real datasets, participants will gain experience moving from exploratory analysis to presentation-ready visualizations that convey clear takeaways.
Prerequisites: This course uses the ggplot2 package and requires students to have basic familiarity with data manipulation in either R or Python. (Python users may access ggplot functions using the Plotnine library.) Some experience with ggplot2 is helpful but not required; we will teach the fundamentals and build from there. This workshop is intended for any UX researcher, survey specialist, marketing researcher, or other professional who needs to communicate quantitative research findings to diverse audiences.
Not an R or Python user? The principles of good data visualization apply to every platform. And you can sign up for a free introductory webinar on data handling in R, which covers the prerequisite for this course.
Join us in the beautiful waterfront venue at Fort Mason for this live class from the Quant UX Association! (This course is not available virtually.)
