About this event

Russell Hall (bass), Leo Larratt (guitar) and Matt Lee (piano) bring their instrumental wizardry and musical imagination to a Woods Hole living room for a wide-ranging exploratory jazz concert on Tuesday, April 7, at 7:30 PM.

The concert's Woods Hole location, and other important information, will be emailed to ticket holders about 24h before the show.

I'm excited to hear this amazing trio! For starters, Russell is one of my favorite NYC musicians. His bass playing is almost acrobatic. His singing is straight from the heart. "You can hear the full lineage of Black music in what he does, but it never feels like imitation—it’s his own voice," says pianist Emmet Cohen. "Creating with him feels like tapping into something deeper than the notes on the page."

Wynton Marsalis says, “Russell is so creative. He has a wildness to him." Bass guru Ron Carter says that Russell, "has learned to inject humor into his bass playing in the process of becomming famous."

One review described Russell's musicianship as, "doe-eyed and wistful." Another says it's, "In your face." Russell cites the influence of Willie Nelson, Parliament Funkadelic, Johannes Brahms and Black Sabbath. I've seen Russell play in several contexts. It's all true.

Russell is bringing Leo Larratt, a skillful, swinging guitarist, who moved to NYC at age 23 to learn from the likes of Russell Malone, George Coleman and Houston Person. One review said that Leo's playng is, "as fresh and sweet as the smell of a donut shop at 5 am."

Russell is also bringing Matt Lee, a jazz pianist with rock-star sensibilities. His early influences include Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis. He was expelled from a prestigious Italian conservatory for his "exuberant" style. Early in his career, he opened for Van Morrison and Tom Jones, earning what the English press calls him "The Genius of Rock’n'Roll". Here's a video of Matt Lee playing two pianos at once: https://youtu.be/Dh14anMFyYM

Russell was born in Jamaica. Leo Larratt is from Australia. Matt Lee is from Italy. Don't let anybody tell you that immigrants are wrecking America! Please join us for a night of unpredictable, but predictably exciting, music!
