About this event

ThinkSelf invites the community to a celebration of FIVE years of operations as a Deaf-led, independent Minnesota-based nonprofit!

We are inviting the public to celebrate our five-year anniversary aboard the spacious Betsey Northrup riverboat (Padelford Packet Boat Company) at Harriet Island in St. Paul on July 14, 2022. This event intends to celebrate five years of service - with more than two of those years taking place during a global pandemic - and raise awareness of the importance of accessible services for Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing adults. Ticket options start at $25 and include a taco bar, soft drinks, music, and a silent auction. A cash bar will also be available.

American Sign Language interpreters will be on site to facilitate communication between English speakers and ASL users. Any funds raised will support ThinkSelf operations.

About ThinkSelf

ThinkSelf provides Adult Basic Education instruction to a diverse community with an incredible range of life experiences. Seventy percent of our learners identify as immigrants or refugees and hail from a wide variety of educational, linguistic and cultural backgrounds; our teaching team leans on volunteers to support them in providing effective instruction in a multi-level classroom.

ThinkSelf’s other primary program serves survivors of domestic and sexual violence, as well as general crime. Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing individuals are 1.5 times more likely to experience interpersonal violence in their lifetime compared to non-Deaf peers; they also face unique barriers to justice and healing. Our advocacy team also provides training to community members and professionals (including advocates, attorneys, and law enforcement).

"Our participants, learners and community allies are the leaders of our organization,” said Aaron Gutzke, Executive Director of ThinkSelf. “They challenge us every day to continue to evolve and create innovative programming that fosters self-empowerment and resilience.” This philosophy has led ThinkSelf to enjoy a biannual venture into the arts; most recently, we were awarded a grant from the Metro Regional Arts Council to provide classes in creative self-care methodolgies.

ThinkSelf, Inc. is a Deaf-founded, Deaf-led agency that uses American Sign Language as its primary mode of communication. Ten of twelve current ThinkSelf employees identify as Deaf, DeafBlind or Hard of Hearing. With a main office based in St. Paul, ThinkSelf provides services and collaborates with agencies in delivering services across the state.

ThinkSelf’s mission is to offer resources, education and support to Minnesota Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing adults seeking full access to options for learning, safety, justice, employment skills, and community. Our work is funded by private donations along with grants from the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE), Office of Justice Programs (OJP), Office on Violence against Women (OVW), Integrated English Literacy and Civics Education (IELCE), Otto Bremer Trust (OBT), Minnesota Humanities Center (MHC), MDE Additional Funding (Tech), ARPA Survivor Support & Prevention, ProLiteracy, Butler Foundation, Metro Regional Arts Council, and Dollar General.
