About this event

Financial abuse or economic abuse is often part of an overall pattern of coercive control, and many times people do not realise that this is happening to them. Because of feelings of shame and hopelessness about financial difficulties, they may not ask for help. This ESRC Festival of Social Science event is designed to allow people to gain information that may be of practical benefit to themselves and people they may know who are being financially abused. It is important to also recognise that financial or economic abuse can occur in relationships, families, in coercive groups or cults and also in trafficking gangs. This event will feature experts in the field of financial abuse and coercive control covering the following topics:

  • Financial and Economic Abuse across coercive control contexts – Dr Rod Dubrow-Marshall (Co-Programme Leader, MSc Psychology of Coercive Control, University of Salford)
  • It is Sinking in Plain Sight: Financial Abuse Through The Quicksand Model® - Kate Amber MSc (Founder and Chief Visionary Officer of End Coercive Control USA and Creator of The Quicksand Model® of Coercive Control).
  • The Price of Belonging: Financial Abuse, Coercive Control, and Cult and Trafficking Survivorship- Dr Jennifer French Tomasic (owner of Jennifer French, LLC), Felicia Rosario MD (MD, Founder & Principal, Felicia Rosario Consulting)
  • The lived experience of financial abuse in a religious cult – Richard Turner, MSc (cult recovery counselling and coercive control training)
