About this event
SUMMER AT THE SANCTUARY – MORE LOVE, MORE ACCESS, ALL SEASON LONG
You can never have too much love these days, and summer is one of the best times to come find it here.
Spend a couple hours slowing down, breathing a little deeper, and sharing space with animals who have every reason not to trust the world, but choose connection anyway. Maybe you need that kind of presence right now. Maybe you have some to give back. Either way, it meets you here.
Across 23 different species, you’ll wander through pens and pastures, meeting the individuals who call Broken Shovels home. Our caretakers and volunteers are always nearby, ready to share their stories, their personalities, and the small, meaningful moments that make up their daily lives.
And every visit matters more than it might seem. Your ticket directly supports animals rescued from neglect, abuse, and abandonment, helping us continue to offer them the kind of lifelong care and safety they were never meant to go without.
To make sure this space stays open and accessible to as many people as possible, our intentionally low pricing continues through the season. Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the gate, and EBT/SNAP guests are always welcomed with free admission, simply bring your card and join us.
We believe connection shouldn’t be limited by cost, and this has been an important part of how we share this place with our community.
We’re also one of the only farm animal sanctuaries easily accessible by public transportation, just one block from the 88 bus line and about a 15-minute walk from rail service. Check Google Maps transit for the easiest route to get here.
A few important notes before you visit:
- No outside food or drinks for humans or animals
- Tickets are non-refundable unless an event is canceled due to severe weather
- Please arrive on time, we cannot extend hours for late arrivals
- Every guest requires a ticket, regardless of age
- Food and drinks (if available) are sold separately
- No companion animals allowed on-site or in vehicles
Visitor Guidelines
Broken Shovels Farm Sanctuary is a safe place for animals rescued from abuse, neglect, slaughter, and exploitation. We do not breed or sell animals.
This is not a petting zoo. While many of the animals enjoy affection, they are not here for entertainment. They are individuals living their lives, and you are being invited into their space.
Please move gently, respect their boundaries, and allow them to choose how they interact. Some will come right up to you. Others may prefer distance. Both are equally important.
Many of our residents are elderly, healing, or living with chronic conditions. Our care is guided by long-term wellbeing and veterinary support, which may not always match outside expectations. We are always happy to answer questions and share more about their care.
Above all, this is a place built on trust. Thank you for being part of that when you visit.
