About the Class

This six-week scene study class is designed for actors (ages 18 and up) with varying levels of experience– from those returning to the stage after a break to those looking to sharpen their skills–to deep dive into two- or three-person scenes from contemporary plays.

The class will create a warm, non-judgmental, and collaborative environment. Each session will start with acting warm-ups and exercises to get the creative juices flowing and foster an open and supportive atmosphere where students feel comfortable taking risks and experimenting.

Over the course of the six weeks, students will be grouped and assigned short scenes from contemporary plays. The instructor will guide the students through key acting techniques and concepts, including:

  • Character Development: Exploring how to fully inhabit and bring depth to the characters in the scene.
  • Beats: Understanding how to identify and execute the shifts in motivation, emotion, and action within a scene.
  • Objectives: Defining clear, actionable objectives for each character that drive the scene forward.
  • Pacing: Controlling the timing, rhythm, and energy of a scene.

Students will apply these skills directly to their assigned scenes and receive supportive feedback from the instructor and their peers. Actors will challenge themselves, refine their craft, and expand their repertoire with an opportunity for a showcase at the end of the class.

Overall, this six-week scene study course is an excellent opportunity for actors to deeply explore contemporary dramatic material, develop their core acting techniques, and grow as performing artists.
