About this event

Evan Arntzen (clarinet, saxophone, vocals) & Matt deChamplain (piano) will perform a concert of traditional jazz standards and original compositions in a Woods Hole living room on Monday, June 8 at 7:30 PM.

Ticket holders will get a "concert info" email with the show's Woods Hole location, and other important information, about 24h before the show.

Evan Arntzen and Matt deChamplain have been exploring the Great American Songbook together for about 5 years. They both grew up in musical families. Evan says they share, "the same kind of foundation in early New Orleans music - 'sweet, soft with plenty rhythm,' as Jelly Roll would say."

I first heard Evan at Mona's - where else? - waaaay back, maybe fifteen years ago, when he first arrived in New York from his Vancouver, BC home, where his grandfather Lloyd's love of New Orleans style music infected the whole Arntzen family. He's been to Woods Hole half a dozen times, with his banjo-playing brother Arnt, with pianist Brennen Ernst, with Gordon Webster, Jon Erik Kellso, Tal Ronen, and in several other guises. He earned his masters degree in music in 2022 from the Manhattan School of Music. Today he's a regular with Vince Giordano's Nighthawks and Catherine Russell's combo. But he still shows up at Mona's to turn it up to 11.

Matt deChamplain also grew up in a musical family. He has a collection of player piano rolls by Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Waller and James P Johnson. His piano playing has been heard lots around here. He's played with Shawnn Monteiro, with Greg Abate, and at the Provincetown Jazz Festival, and in a Woods Hole concert with the Jason Anick Quartet. But he's also played with inhabitants of the wider musical world, like Dave Brubeck and Wynton Marsalis. One review says, "Matt graduated at the top of his class, and is well on his way to world-class musician status." Another review cites, "Matt's mastery of piano tradition from ragtime, stride, and blues through modern and contemporary styles." Other reviews use language like, "amazing dexterity and superb taste," and, "extraordinary skills and musicality."

I expect a magical evening of old music, new ideas and surprising collaboration. Please join us.
