About this event

Was Oliver Cromwell a Royal Executioner or Our Chief of Men?

Step back into the tumultuous era of the English Civil War with historian and performer Max Keen in this lively, thought-provoking presentation Oliver Cromwell: Royal Executioner or Our Chief of Men?.

Max, a retired history teacher with a passion for bringing the past to life, combines multimedia projection, period costume, and engaging storytelling to explore the life and legacy of Oliver Cromwell — one of the most controversial figures in British history.

In an era of king and parliament in bitter conflict, Cromwell emerged as a military leader, statesman, and Lord Protector, inspiring fierce loyalty and equally intense criticism. This talk examines:

  • Cromwell’s rise from country squire to commander of Parliament’s forces

  • His role in the Civil War and the trial and execution of King Charles I

  • Debates over his reputation — tyrant, hero, or something in between

  • How his actions helped shape the future of Britain

With humour, drama, and plenty of audience appeal, this presentation brings fresh insight into a complex historical character — ideal for history lovers and anyone curious about the forces that shaped modern Britain.
