271st Anniversary of the Battle of the Monongahela: History in the Valley

On July 9, 1755, a cataclysmic battle with global implications took place in present-day Braddock and North Braddock, Pennsylvania. We invite you to join us as we remember the story of the Battle of the Monongahela, or "Braddock's Defeat", and the history of the surrounding area at Braddock’s Battlefield History Center, Carnegie One Braddock, and Rivers of Steel Pump House!

Braddock’s Battlefield History Center

Walk in the footsteps of history at the place where the battle began! Our annual commemoration of the battle includes firing demonstrations, living history interpreters, and more!

Carnegie One Braddock

Carnegie One Braddock (formerly Braddock Carnegie Library Association) is offering tours of its recently renovated National Historic Landmark building. Other activities for adults and youth include painting ceramic tiles which will then be used to create an art installation. Participants can also assist in making wind chimes from recycled objects; these chimes will be installed at Carnegie One and throughout the community.

Rivers of Steel Pump House 

Join a docent and explore the history of the Rivers of Steel Pump House! The Pump House dates back to 1892 when it was built by the Carnegie Steel Company. That same year, it was the site of the Battle of Homestead, a defining moment in the nation’s labor history. Today, the building and its adjacent water tower help to interpret the tumultuous events of 1892, as well as to highlight the illustrious steel-making legacy of the region.
