About this event

First you'll smile. Then you'll hear the brilliant musicianship when Miss Maybell and her Ragtime Romeos play a concert in a Woods Hole living room at 7:30 PM on Thursday, September 25, 2025. (Note: Ticket holders will get a "concert info" email about 24h before the show detailing concert location and other important information.)

Miss Maybell and her Ragtime Romeos feature Miss Maybell on vocals, washboard, ukulele, banjo, guitar, kazoo, etc., along with Charlie Judkins on honky-tonk piano, and Andy Stein on violin, horn-violin (ya gotta hear it!), and saxophone. Their "jazz age" music dates from about 1890 to 1920. You can almost hear the scratches from the original 78 RPM recordings . . . even though many of their songs have NEVER been recorded.

One reviewer writes, "I may have had more fun at a Birdland performance Friday night than anything else legally possible in Manhattan . . . Miss Maybell [and her Ragtime Romeos play] with equal gusto and integrity . . . Syncopated musical crosscurrents emerge in hot jazz, blues and ragtime. It’s impossible to sit still."

Their repertoire includes, "Sailing down the Chesapeake Bay," "Oh Boy, what a Girl," and "Minnie the Mermaid," with the unforgettable line, "I forgot my morals, there among the corals." Here's a video of Minnie . . . https://youtu.be/tJ7GboRdG6o

And here's another video of Maybell doing "Georgia Lee" (1915): https://youtu.be/OEzV3_SsR20

Pianist Charlie Judkins has been playing piano since he was 5, and he turned pro at age 17, playing ragtime gigs and accompanying silent movies. He teamed up with Miss Maybell in 2018.

The third Romeo, Andy Stein, is something of a legend. He was a founding member of Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen - remember "Smoke, Smoke, Smoke that Cigarette" and "Hot Rod Lincoln"? He's worked with Asleep at the Wheel, Emmylou Harris, Bob Dylan, Dr. John, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Charlie Daniels and just about everybody else. He was a member of the Prairie Home Companion house band. He's been a featured soloist on several Broadway shows. Today, he's a regular with Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks, every week at Birdland.

So, you see, it's going to be a hot night in our little village.
