About this event

New Orleans trombone player Charlie Halloran and the Tropicales will play a concert in a Woods Hole location on Saturday, August 9, at 7:30 PM. The Tropicales play New Orleans jazz that's heavily flavored with the music of the Carribbean. The band features Charlie on trombone, with Anna Laura Quinn on vocals, Tomas Majcherski on reeds, Nahum Zdybel on guitar, Pete Olynciw playing bass, and Doug Garrison on percussion.

Ticket holders will be informed of the concert location - and other important information - about 24h before the show.

Last year's Woods Hole concert by The Tropicales was hailed by Duke Robillard's wife Laurene, who sat with Duke in the front row. "What a great show and a fantastic band!! Check them out!" she wrote.

New Orleans is said to be the northern-most port of the Carribbean. New Orleans jazz feels the influence of beguine from the French Caribbean, calypso from Trinidad, and many other island musical traditions.

When I visit New Orleans on music safari, one of the wild things I stalk is Charlie Halloran's trombone. Charlie is a truly thrilling player! He's a regular at The Spotted Cat and DBA, where you can find him sitting in with Tuba Skinny, the Shotgun Jazz Band, the Panorama Jazz Band, and several other great local groups. He has recorded with Maria Muldaur, on her Grammy nominated Don’t You Feel My Leg. He's also made records with the Squirrel Nut Zippers, Rickie Lee Jones, U2, Pokey Lafarge, and many others. Charlie’s horn provides New Orleans flavor for shows like NCIS New Orleans and Treme. Downbeat magazine has named him a rising star.

In addition to Charlie, here's the rest of the band:

Anna Laura Quinn is a New Orleans vocalist who sings from the American Songbook, but also includes French and Brazilian songs in her repertoire. One reviewer says her voice is a "well-worked instrument" whose stylings and energy "bring new vitality to classic tunes by the likes of Cole Porter and Duke Ellington." She leads a band called "The Unmentionables," 'nuff said.

Tomas Majcherski, on reeds, has musical roots in New Orleans and New York City, where he's part of the scene that orbits through Mona's, the Spotted Cat, and other trad jazz venues. He was recently in Woods Hole as a member of Aurora Nealand's band.

Nahum Zdybel, on guitar, is based New Orleans, playing with countless traditional jazz groups, as well as with Leyla McCalla. His musical forbears include Eddie Lang, Charlie Christian, Johnny St Cyr, and Mark Ribot.

Pete Olynciw, on bass, holds down a regular gig at the New Orleans trad jazz landmark, Court of Two Sisters, and also tours the world with Leyla McCalla.

Doug Garrison, on percussion, has been based in New Orleans since 1993. He's made 8 albums with The Iguanas, a New Orleans roots-rock band. He's multi-idomatic, playing country, rock, traditional jazz, modern jazz, free improvised music, and klezmer.
